It’s so easy to feel not in control of our health today. We go in to see a doctor and they hardly talk to us. We ask questions about why we feel the way we feel or why our health is the way it is and we get vague answers. We get prescribed treatments that target symptoms not root causes (a.k.a. customer retention).
One of the saddest stories I’ve been told was one of a cancer patient who asked their doctor how they could participate in their battle. They just want to play a role in their fight and make sure they were doing everything they could to win the fight. The response from the doctor was there was nothing they could do and to just sit back and receive treatment. Criminal.
If you’re ever not feeling in control of your health, remember that most chronic diseases are driven by lifestyle and not genetics. This isn’t an argument about the role of genetics in disease. Note that I didn’t say caused by. I said driven by. Regardless of our genetics, what we put in our body, how we move our body, how we manage stress, how we sleep, and how we enjoy ourselves all plays a major role in whether or not we will live a life burdened with diseases like heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, neurodegenerative disease, and even cancer.
Do what you can everyday to consider the health of future you. Note that sometimes this may be sacrificing health for pleasure, but most times it will be doing the next right thing. Understand the control this can give you over your health.
This especially applies to those who are already burdened with chronic disease or feel like you are on the path towards it. Your daily lifestyle choices determine if you are feeding or fighting your disease. You're the one in control!
