Some of you may have seen that my wife and I just announced our first pregnancy a couple of weeks ago. We truly couldn’t be more excited to bring a little boy into this world. Things are already changing so quickly but we are excited for the adventures and struggles that are coming.
Naturally, I have focused a lot more of my time on researching nutrition for pregnancy and nutrition for babies/children. I felt this was pretty important to get out ahead on since there is a surprising amount of misinformation out there. Especially considering that in our first doctor’s appointment we were told to avoid eating saturated fat because it was bad for the baby…..I almost didn’t have the heart to tell the doctor that 50% of the fatty acids in breast milk are saturated fats. Almost.
One of the first resources I picked up was Real Food Pregnancy by Lily Nichols. This book has been an incredible resource to help us know what foods to be focusing on and which to avoid. There is also a ton of debunking of misinformation like that organ meat should be avoided due to Vitamin A toxicity and the truth about caffeine during pregnancy.
You will start to see more content coming out on my social media channel about pregnancy and baby nutrition over the next few months and years. It’s important to point out a couple of things about this content. This content is sharing of information I am learning along the way, I am not an expert in these areas but I am relying on those who are. This content is also not a personal attack on you or anyone else. It’s okay if you don’t agree with the content (let me know) and it’s definitely okay if you didn’t follow these suggestions in your past pregnancies/parenthood. These are simply answers to commonly asked pregnancy questions to help those who have them.
I’m really looking forward to continuing to learn about this new area of nutrition and I hope that the content I share helps others achieve more healthy pregnancies and bring healthier babies into this world!
Thanks for reading,
Chris Irvin
P.S. One area that I know nothing about yet is getting kids to eat healthy. But in an attempt to prepare for that part of the journey, I teamed up with my little niece to publish a book that aims to help parents encourage their kids to say yes to healthier foods. This book is called Mommy, Do I Have to Eat This? and is now available.
