I am writing you all to explain a major problem that popped up in the world of keto research and metabolic psychiatry this week and, more importantly, to ask for your help.
Maryland’s Secretary of Health, Laura Herrera Scott, has put a halt to a major study looking at the impact of the ketogenic diet on patients suffering from schizophrenia. This decision was made with no explanation and we need your help signing a petition to get this decision reversed (it only takes 2 seconds of your time).
The study that was halted is being conducted by Professor Deanna Kelly out of Maryland Psychiatric Research Center at the University of Maryland. Professor Kelly is an incredibly reputable researcher who has completed over 25 NIH-sponsored trials. This study is the only inpatient study looking at keto for serious mental illness in the U.S., and stopping this study is not only a massive blow to all the progress being made in the world of metabolic psychiatry but is also directly harming the participants who were recommended by their practitioners and have consented to be a part of this trial. You can hear directly from Professor Kelly here.
The secretary’s decision comes on the heels of a pilot study being published out of Stanford University showing that keto was a powerful aid in treating mental illnesses like schizophrenia. You can see the results of that study below:
As it relates to the study being conducted at the Univerisity of Maryland, the decision to halt the study was made after a 16-week review in which the Health Department found no safety concerns and confirmed that the decision to halt the trial is not based on concerns for the subject’s health but rather a “procedural” decision with no justification being provided. This decision has sparked outrage within the psychiatry community and prompted the Maryland Psychiatric Society, consisting of 775 psychiatrists, to formally request that the research be allowed to continue. A request that, at this time, has remained unanswered.
We have strong evidence that keto can help the individuals recommended for this trial as well as the nearly 3 million individuals in the U.S. suffering from schizophrenia, AND the professionals that represent the Maryland Psychiatric Society agree, yet still, Maryland’s Secretary of Health has decided to shut the trial down anyway.
This is where I ask for your help for both the world of metabolic psychiatry research and for the future of mental health treatment in our country. Dr. Christopher Palmer from Harvard University, author of the landmark book Brain Energy, is petitioning to reverse this decision. If you could take a few seconds today to click the link below, sign the petition, and share it with your friends and family, there would be millions of people indebted to your service.
